What do you need to know about growing walnuts?

  • Proper selection of varieties is of great importance for the success of the plant.
  • Each variety, depending on the technology and lushness, implies a certain planting scheme.
  • Soil preparation is necessary for planting walnuts. Undermining the soil at a depth of 70-80 cm is an obligatory measure of scattering deep layers, which creates favorable conditions for the development of a quality root system.
  • In addition to soil preparation, soil selection is crucial for planting walnuts - it is necessary to choose deep and permeable soils, with a soil reaction of pH 6.5-7.0, as well as about 10 mg of physiologically accessible phosphorus P2O5, about 20 mg of potassium K2O and about 3% humus.
  • Depending on the natural moisture of the soil, the soil is irrigated or not for the best yield of walnuts.
  • Organic fertilization of walnuts is done by mulching and converting organic matter (leaves, straw, twigs) into compost, while fertilization with manure is not recommended after entering the birth faze.
  • The walnut is characterized by the non-simultaneous maturation of the male and female gametophytes, and the time of flowering is conditional for pollination. For good fertility of walnuts, 60 to 80% of female flowers are needed.
  • Quality preparation, adoption of knowledge and technology of planting and cultivation are necessary to guarantee a good yield of walnuts. Growing walnuts is a long-distance race.
